 Balthus - Lady Abdy (1935)The model for the painting was Lady Iya Abdy, a strikingly beautiful blonde who stood over six feet tall (Cecil Beaton famously declared that she “invented size”) and a star brightest of Parisian society in the 1920s and 1930s. Born Iya Grigorievna de Gay in Saint Petersburg in 1897, she escaped with her family to Finland during the Russian Revolution and later moved to France, where she met, married and soon divorced the English shipowner Sir Robert Abdy, the fifth baronet to be so named. She frequented the legendary salon of Vicomtesse Marie-Laure de Noailles, champion of Surrealism at its most infamous, which is most likely where she first met Balthus.(Christie's, New York - Oil on canvas, 185.1 x 134.9 cm)
