 This work is considered a criticism of US intervention in the Korean War. It depicts the 1950 Sinchon Massacre, an act of mass murder committed by North Koreans, South Koreans, and American forces in the town of Sinchon located in South Hwanghae Province, North Korea. Although the actual cause of the Sinchon killings remains unknown, the work appears to portray them as civilians killed by anti-Communist forces. Art critic Kirsten Hoving Keen said it was "inspired by reports of American atrocities" and considered it one of Picasso's communist works. On the left, a group of naked women and children are seen lying at the foot of a mass grave. Several heavily armed knights stand on the right, also nude but equipped with "huge limbs and toned muscles similar to those of prehistoric giants". In Picasso's depiction, this group is clearly chaotic, as is often evident in his portraits of armored soldiers in drawings and lithographs, which can be seen to represent displays a mocking attitude towards the stupidity of war.
