Famous Paintings of Vincent van Gogh - The Night Café (1888)
In a letter to his brother written from Arles in the south of France, van Gogh described the Café de l'Alcazar, where he dined, as “blood red and dull yellow with a billiard table green in the middle, four lemon yellow. The lights have orange and green light. Everywhere there is a clash and contrast between the most different colors of red and blue.” The clashing colors are also intended to represent the “terrible human passions” found in this all-night haunt where vagrants and prostitutes gather. Van Gogh also felt that color had an attractive quality at night, especially under gaslight: in this painting, he wanted to show “the white clothes of the cafe owner guarding a corner of the fireplace How does this become lemon yellow and pale? and brilliant green.” (Yale University Art Gallery - Oil on canvas, 72.4 x 92.1 cm)About the artwork:
