During the first few months of his hospitalization at Saint-Rémy, Van Gogh was not allowed to leave the grounds. This scene, which he painted from his room, shows a walled wheat field with mountains in the background. The harvester works under the bright sun. Wheat is painted in dense, undulating yellow blocks around him. For Van Gogh, it was a symbol of the eternal cycle of nature and the transience of life. As for the reaper, he wrote to his brother that he saw in the image 'the image of death (...) in this sense that humanity will be the wheat to be reaped.' However, he added that this death was "almost smiling". Everything is yellow except for a row of purple hills – a pale yellow.
