Famous Paintings of Vincent van Gogh - Portrait of Doctor Rey (1889)
This work shows Félix Rey, a doctor at the Arles hospital, who healed the artist after a seizure or dementia caused him to have part of his ear amputated. Rey and his family found it ridiculous and impractical and used it for over ten years to plug a hole in the chicken coop, then presumably put it in their attic. In April 1901, future painter Charles Camoin was sent to Arles as part of the French 55th Line Infantry Regiment. There he met Rey, who told him about the painting and sold it to him, Camoin sent it to an art dealer from Marseille, Monsieur Molinard. A few weeks later, unable to find a buyer, the painting was transferred to Anbroise Vollard, an art dealer friend of Camoin in Paris. He found a buyer, but only for 150 francs. The work at that time was called "Framed Portrait of a Man, Face Turned Slightly to the Right, Signed in Red: Vincent, Arles, January 1889."
