Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec - Lady Lili Grenier (1888)
This vivid, expressive portrait depicts Lili Grenier, actress, model and wife of close friend and fellow artist Albert (René) Grenier of Toulouse-Lautrec. Lautrec and Grenier met while studying at the studio of academic painter Fernand Cormon, shortly after Toulouse-Lautrec moved to Paris from his hometown of Albi in 1881 and decided to devote himself to painting. Lautrec's close friendship with the Greniers, with whom the painter spent long periods working in Paris, at Grenier's studio at 19bis rue Fontaine and in Villiers-sur-Morin, where they frequently vacationed, is reflected reflected in several known portraits of the couple. One of them, depicting Lili seated in the same kimono she wears in the present work, is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, while the other, a three-quarter portrait René's plays, kept at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.(Sotheby's, London - Oil on canvas on board, 43.2 x 36.2 cm)About the artwork:
