Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec - The White Horse (1881)
Encouraged by his father's passion for hunting and horseback riding as well as by the animal painter René Princeteau, a family friend who gave him his first drawing lessons, Henri initially mainly drew and drawing dogs and horses. These early works, which already show him to be a keen and perceptive observer, are often still signed “Monfa”, an additional surname used by the Toulouse-Lautrecs, a noble family long ago in the South of France. The white horse Gazelle belonged to the breeding stock of Count Céleyran, Toulouse-Lautrec's mother's family.
