Vincent van Gogh - The Mulberry Tree (1889)
Van Gogh suffered from poor physical and mental health throughout his life. In the spring of 1889, after a series of nervous breakdowns, he found himself an asylum at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. While there, his work evolved from the hallucinatory colors of his Arles period to the ever more vigorous brushwork and ever freer drawing of his late style. . Here, the fiery foliage of mulberries, the rushing sky and the hillside are painted so richly that the surface of the picture becomes a kind of bas-relief sculpture. Van Gogh was particularly pleased with this painting, remarking in letters to his siblings that he considered it his most successful treatment of the subject.
