Vincent van Gogh - Wheat Field (1888)

Vincent van Gogh - Wheat Field (1888)Vincent wrote to Theo on 21 June 1888: 'I have had a week of hard work concentrated in the wheat fields in the sunshine.' The swaying wheat gave him the opportunity to experiment with touch and color. In this work, he juxtaposes the golden color of ripe wheat next to the colorful swirls of yellow, green, blue, red, brown and black of the trees in the foreground. The horizon is unusually high, allowing the fields to take up almost the entire picture. In the distance we made out a row of wheat and the slopes of the Alpilles. Van Gogh painted this subject several times that summer. He wrote to his friend Emile Bernard on June 27 that he had completed 7 studies of wheat fields. 'Old golden landscape - done quickly and hastily, like a silent reaper under the bright sun, concentrating on completing the job.'(Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam - Oil on canvas on cover hard, 54cm x 65cm)
